Beverly Hills Periodontist, Dr. Markzar, Explains the Risk Factors for Periodontal Disease

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif., June 11, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Sam Markzar, Beverly Hills periodontist, emphasizes that patients should be aware of the risk factors of periodontal disease. Knowing the risk factors can help patients seek help to correct bad oral health habits that could lead to periodontal disease, reducing the probability of developing the disease.

Periodontal disease is a condition in which the gums become inflamed, red, and swollen from a bacterial infection. Over time, if the bacteria are not eliminated, gum tissue, connective tissue, and bone may be lost. When gums begin to recede, the teeth could become loose and fall out. Periodontal disease is also linked to other serious health problems, such as pneumonia, heart disease, and certain cancers. As a result, periodontal disease must be taken seriously.

Age is perhaps the biggest risk factor for developing periodontal disease, explains Dr. Markzar, Beverly Hills dental implants dentist. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, 70 percent of Americans aged 65 and over have periodontal disease. It is especially important for seniors to see a dentist regularly for early detection of periodontal disease before the bacteria has the opportunity to cause significant problems.

Bad habits can also exacerbate periodontal disease. Smoking, teeth grinding and tobacco use has been linked to the condition. Smokers are significantly more likely to develop periodontal disease than non-smokers, warns Dr. Markzar, Los Angeles periodontist. In addition, obesity and poor nutrition have been linked to periodontal disease, as has teeth grinding and clenching.

The presence of certain illnesses can also increase the probability that the patient will develop periodontal disease. Patients with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and rheumatoid arthritis have a greater risk for developing periodontal disease. In addition, taking certain medications, such as certain oral contraceptives, anti-depressants, and heart medications, can increase the likelihood of developing periodontal disease.
